How a bill becomes a law
Executive: The executive government puts forward potential laws called bills and introduce them. This group is made up of the Prime Minister and the cabinet which is a group of people that are chosen by the Prime Minister to join the front bench. Other politicians can introduce bills these are called private members bills. But these bills don’t easily go through because they don’t have a majority of seats in the house representatives. The cabinet is in charge of all the governments ideas and plans.
Parliment (house of representatives and senate): The bill firstly goes to the house of representatives to be introduced then it can be debated. While the bill is in the House of Representatives members discuss and make speeches to explain why they agree or disagree. The bill may be sent to a committee by the House of Representatives to learn more about it. The committee finds information from the members of the community, experts and interest groups. The committee writes a report with evidence to support the idea, this report is presented to the house of representatives. Now Members of Parliament vote on whether they are agreeing with the main idea. The Members of Parliament choose their sided. They now consider the bill and debate and vote for changes. Amendments are suggested. If the bill is approved it goes to the senate and is ready to be debated. The same process is followed in the senate.
Governer general: The bills would be checked and approved by the governor general after the they get passed by the House of Representatives and the senate. When the governor general passes these bills, it is also known as a ‘Royal Assent’. The governor general is the kings representative who delivers speeches from the throne.
Departments: Government departments put these laws into action. The responsible minister must put the new law into action after the bill has become a law. They must make sure that all young people know about the new law by sharing it on social media, billboards, posters and many more ways.
